Stems connect the headset to the handlebars. An essential element that allows you to steer the bike. Available in aluminum and carbon, the lighter the stem the better. The stem needs to also be super-strong. Breaking under high loads, landings, pot holes, crashing, etc. is not desirable.
The large variety of stem lengths allows riders to choose smaller (lighter) frames and still have their desired reach. But the length can dramatically effect ease and the feel (quick, slow) of turning. Best to test them out before purchasing.
